As a teenager in the 80s, some of my favourite bands were German:  Accept, Warlock and Scorpions. Since then, I’ve not spent a lot of time on the German scene, bar a few bands here and there.

So let’s begin a new venture into discovering more German bands with Agonie, a new Black Metal band from Lower Saxony, which ironically is in the north of the country.

Agonie only formed last year, originally as a one man band. And although they’ve since expanded into a full band, they still have that feel of someone creating music in their bedroom. The production is slightly on the raw side, but this only enhances the icy feel of the music and the pure hatred of the vocals.

Normally bands tend to put their strongest song at the beginning, but I think this demo gets stronger and stronger as it progresses and by the time I got to the finale of the appropriately titled Ende, I was completely won over and also gutted that the demo was over.

I always like to find a band at the very beginning of their (possible) career because it’s a good feeling seeing how they develop. I think with Mammon, they have a very good debut and I hope it’s a solid platform for them to move onto bigger things

A Fan Review (Review by Vincent, Germany)

 

Wer auf der Suche nach sanften Melodien oder nach harmonischem Metal ist, der ist hier komplett falsch! Aber alle die, die das Geschredere von Gitaren lieben und ein Fan von Doublebase sind und generell auf härtere Musik stehen, die sind hier genau richtig! Das Album ist das beste Black Metal Album, was ich seit Monaten gehört habe und neben diesem ganzen Neuen Kram von den großen Bands, ist das mal wieder etwas richtig Geiles! Wenn man das gehört hat fragt man sich, wieso diese Band eigentlich nicht auf großer Tour war! Dieses wunderschöne Album, Mammon von Agonie, ist einfach alles, was sich ein Fan des Black Metals wünscht. Die Titel und Texte des Albums sind genau so hart wie die Musik an sich. Durch die Doublebase wird der Sound schön schnell und ist dadurch perfekt, um seine Haare mal ordentlich wallen zu lassen! Auch die Gitarren tragen ihren Teil bei, zum Einen sind sie schnell und schreddern ordentlich, aber auf der anderen Seite erkennt man dann doch ein wenig Melodie, was sich einfach großartig anhört. Beim letzten Song zeigt die Band auch nocheinmal witz, indem sie erst einen Opernsängern einspielt und man sich denkt "warte mal, ich dachte, das wäre Black Metal". Aber nach kurzer Zeit gehts dann wieder richtig los und man kann sich nocheinmal am letzten Song dieses Albums richtig erfreuen. Es ist einfach insgesamt wunderbarer Underground Black Metal und ich freue mich schon auf das nächste Album, welches mit Sicherheit wieder großartig wird! Und an Alle, die dieses Album noch nicht in ihren Regalen stehen haben (oder wo auch immer ihr eure CD's aufbewahrt), ihr verpasst echt was!

For anyone who's looking for some soft melodies or "harmonic" metal - here you're completely wrong! This album is the best one I heared since months and, in addition to the new stuff of the famous bands, it's something really good. If I have heard the CD I wonder why this band was not actually on tour! This beautiful album, Mammon by Agonie, is simply everything that fan of Black Metal wants. The title and lyrics of the album are just as hard as the music itself. Through the double base the sound is pretty fast and is therefore perfect to bang your head! The guitars play their part in, on the one hand they are fast and shred properly, but on the other hand can be seen then but a little melody - that sounds just great. During the last song, the band also shows joke once again. You can hear an opera singers and you think to yourself "wait a minute, I thought it was Black Metal". It's just a whole wonderful Underground Black Metal album and I am looking forward to the next album, which is great again for sure! Get this CD or you really missed something!

Agonie aus Hildesheim haben Ende September 2014 ihr erstes Demo mit dem Titel 'Mamonn' veröffentlicht. Um eines gleich vorweg zu sagen: Agonie spielen und überzeugen durch sehr undergroundig angelehnten Black Metal. Alleine schon das Intro 'Erwachen' zeigt sofort, dass hier ganz bewusst auf einen glatten hochglanz sound verzichtet wird. Nach dem kurzen Intro kommt der erste song 'Omen'. Das Lied geht flott los und es "rumpelt" etwas. Ein eher gradlinger song, der aber nach mehrmaligen hören durchaus zu gefallen weiß. 'Omen' erinnert mich ein wenig an 'Blackwinged' von Darkthrone's CD Total Death. In 'Blackwinged' gibt es im letztem viertel nahezu das gleiche Riff wie "Omen" anfängt" und sich durchzieht. Auch der etwas wummernde Bass ist vergleichbar. Sehr sympathisch! Ab dem zweiten Song 'Menschenhass' und mit den nachfolgenden 'Ignoranz', 'Eure Saat' entfaltet sich der Reiz an diesem Demo erst richtig. Geboten werden interessante Riffs, immer wieder einsetzendes Drumming , welches treibt und bei Laune hält. Der letzte song 'Ende-Ein Neubeginn' stellt für mich neben 'Omen' das Highlight auf diesem Demo dar. Dort werden nochmal alle Register gezogen und das Lied beeinhaltet alle Stärken von Agonie. Da wäre der markante Gesang, einprägsame Riffs und treibene Drums. Insgesammt gefällt mir das Demo durchaus recht gut. Es ist sehr erfrischend, und hat mit dem Hochglanz Black Metal, wie zum Beispiel Dark Funeral inzwischen spielen nichts zu tun. Ich bin schon sehr gespannt auf mehr von Agonie. Interessant finde ich auch, dass Agonie textlich nicht satanisch orientiert sind oder irgendwelchen Kriegsthemen nachgehen, sondern den Menschen im Blickpunkt haben. Natürlich im negativen Sinne, ansonsten wäre es ja auch nicht Black Metal und auch nicht Agonie! Wer ehrlichen und eher rohen Black Metal mag sollte mal ein Ohr riskieren

Agonie are a German black metal band formed in Lower Saxony last year as a one man project but has recently expanded to a full band. Their debut release, ‘Mammon’, is 6 tracks of raw black metal goodness.

After a short intro, the first track proper, ‘Omen’ roars into life, a violent cocktail of blasting, inhuman shrieks and hynoptic riffing. There’s also an underlying ambient feeling as well, underpinning the metal with a droning atmosphere. ‘Menshenhass’ is a slower track, with a fuller bass performance that adds a bit of heft to the music. The vocals are still nasty, the riffs are still razor sharp, but the drumming is pleasantly heavy. There’s a good crunch to some of the slower sections that’s also pretty killer.

‘Ignoranz’ is probably the best track here, matching raw black metal with some cool, slower sections that add a great deal of atmosphere. There’s moments that bring to mind the majesty of Drudkh or Wolves in the Throne Room. It’s good to see a band taking on those kind of ideas while still retaining an element of raw assault. Most will pick one or the other. ‘Eure Saat’ is similar, taking a more measured pace and adding in some nice guitar leads in places. Closing track ‘Ende – Ein Neubeginn’ starts with a baritone vocal sung in German with screaming in the background and a menacing fuzz. It’s quite unsettling. The track itself is more solid black metal.

Agonie have got a good sound on this demo here, and I’d like to hear more from them. I’d like them to develop their more atmospheric sections I think to become something a bit more special but none the less this is a great demo.

Formed in 2013, Agonie is a relatively young band. They play black metal and hail from Germany. Now they have their 2014 demo Mammon released.

Mammon contains an intro and 5 tracks and has an total length of 25 minutes. Black metal at its purest form is something you can expect when you begin to play this demo. Fast, heavy, harsh, evil and pure darkness, that's where Agonie stands for. Especially the screams are very nicely done, this person can really scream, you can hear the emotions but you can almost feel it too. The production is dark, harsh and gruesome, maybe because it is a demo, maybe because of the fact that it fits, maybe both, but it sounds great though. Agonie has made a very good demo.

Agonie hails from the Lower Saxony (Germany) and, with their debut demo, they offer a classical sounding black metal record.
I hear many influences in their music, from the early ages of Norwegian black metal to some interesting influences from the almighty Swedish death metal scene.
Some sections of this demo remind me of Naglfar’s Vittra which can only be a great thing.
The vocals, in particular, are very Naglfar-like: harsh and high-pitched…and also pretty good.
The only weakness is that sometimes the production sounds even too raw, but c’mon, it’s a demo and we can go over this.
Stand-out track: Ignoranz, it seems to fly back to the golden age of black metal!
